Pre Game Map
Welcome to Eden. Before the game can begin all players are asked to please choose a starting area. Since we didn't think up a clever way of doing this fairly/randomly we're just going to go by who can post fastest.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
So... GO! Please select a starting location (denoted by those weird little X things) by color.
Possible colors (to avoid confusion for me):
1. White
2. Bright Green
3. Grey
4. Faded Blue
5. Yellow
6. Pink
7. Dark Red
8. Black
9. Dark Blue
10. Light Blue
A Key:
White (The area in the northern third of the map) is snow/glacial mountains
Grey: Non-snow covered mountains.
Dark Green (in North) Pine forest
Dark Green (in South) Jungle
Middle-Green (In Southeast) Marsh
Yellow: Desert
Dark Blue: Saltwater
Light Blue: Freshwater (Rivers, Lakes, and Streams.
Understand that this is simply what the map looks like at the beginning of play. As a player you'll have ample time to alter the world (or at least your small corner of it) as you see fit. Use the "Action" portion of your turn to do so. Alterations that are close to where your followers live should be fairly simple, Alterations farther afield should be more difficult.
When denoting locations on the map, use cardinal directions to note location ect. I will provide everyone with smaller-scale maps of their chosen civilizations upon request (and will post them directly into your player section)
Re: Pre Game Map
Snagging the White starting location in the Southern Jungle, If anyone else had hoped to start in or near a jungle let me know, I might be able to change the map ever so slightly to accommodate you / I can maybe add another starting location to the jungle area.
Re: Pre Game Map
Shotty Dark Red in the central mountains. additional post incoming.

I am claiming the Dark Blue staring area in the eastern plains.

I'll take light blue in the top left. Pine forest.

The Cklethtik peoples origin is in the desert (light green in south-west).

Re: Pre Game Map
Ok, there are 3 starting zone remaining and I think only one player without a claim (admittedly, he only learned about the game a couple days ago). There's the insect-infested swamps of the Southeast, the rockslide-plagued high slopes of the Western Mountain range, and the Prone-to-horrible-flooding lakeshore of the central plains.
Really, we've all spread out pretty well. Well, sort of, the North is going to be an interesting show at least.

Re: Pre Game Map
Hey question. Is the world spherical/toroidal? Are we just seeing a flat projection of a spherical world with one continent, or can we go off the edge? I'm assuming that we, as gods, would be able to see enough to answer that question.

Re: Pre Game Map
I don't see why they would would not be spherical. I vote to approve that motion. Otherwise it would be hard to keep all the water on our planet.

Hey hey hey. Don't go bashing a DiscWorld. The turtle moves, mate!

Re: Pre Game Map
Is that how they keep all the water on the disc? I was never too clear on that point.

Re: Pre Game Map
Yeah, as much as I love A'Tuin, I think it's a lot easier to just think of the world as spherical or toroidal.

Re: Pre Game Map
I just googled where the water comes from on Discworld and stumbled into a nest of speculation that might rival conspiracy theorists. I don't remember any explicit explanations by Pratchett himself, so I'm willing to believe the claim I stumbled across that he's avoided answering that question.
Also, the world is presumably roughly spherical. I was under the impression that our influence only extended to the reaches of this particular land masses' "territorial waters," though.

So does this suggest that there is more to the world which we can't access? Or rather (more to the point) Does it mean that Patrick can't sail west from the desert to meet/attack Stephen on the eastern plains? Or indeed that I can't sail north from my mountains to take a dump in one of Tyler's jungle hovels?

Re: Pre Game Map
Yeah, that's the idea. However it would be handy to help the swamp folk urinate on the structures their women and children may inadvisably attempt to build.
Alas, even with urination as an incentive I'm sticking to my initial thought, though.

Re: Pre Game Map
Its a flat projection of a spherical world as far as I'm concerned. You aren't exactly all-powerful yet though, so you don't know what lies on the other side of the oceans. (more ocean, and more, and more, and more).

But hey, good news if you're an aquatic species!

Re: Pre Game Map
Eugh, sure. Please don't give me the headache of making another map. In the future I might place our game world a hex layer or two below the lowest resolution to give us more expansion room, but I didn't honestly think that would be an issue.
Re: Pre Game Map
Why not just have it wrap around? If you go off the edge on one part of the map, you enter the edge of another?
We don't need another continent. I'm just wondering if a ship would have to completely circle around the continent to get anywhere or if they could just go around the back of the map.

Re: Pre Game Map
I was kind of thinking that we were on the only island on a big-enough globe, which would insinuate that while you could pull a Magellan, it would be a helluva lot more efficient to sail around the coast if you wanted to get from one side to the other by boat.
Historically, this is how people explored too. We* mapped out Africa well before we found America, didn't we?
*Obviously by we I mean medieval cartographers.

What? I thought it was us who first circumnavigated Africa. We took all those Facebook pictures of it and everything.

Re: Pre Game Map
I hadn't really thought of that, the map was designed in a sort of northern hemisphere centric viewpoint (North is cold and barren, South is lush and tropical). I'd be ok with E<->W transits though. It might make things a bit more interesting
For the record though, at what passes for the equator on the map it's 252 km across. If, however, you were to transit the ocean, you'd only have to go about a 100 kilometers.
